Stage 3 of the Tour de France was the most scenic of the Corsican trinity. Judging by Twitter many wanted to be there plus I’ve had a couple of queries by email.
If you’re interested in going, some quick tips for a cycling trip:
- Avoid July and August as the crowds mean more traffic
- June is good but if you want to swim in the sea, September is better for warm water
- The riding is like coastal Italy: stunning but you’re watching out for the rough roads and German motorcyclists
- Travel around the island takes time, if you stay in one place it’s an effort to visit the whole island, concentrate on what’s near
- Stage 1 showed the flat coastal areas which if they looked good from the helicopter are more crowded
- Calvi, the finish for Stage 3 is a good place to access the north and west coast as well as the areas inland
- It’s can be very windy in winter so think twice about it as a winter destination
- There are bike shops but pack a few obvious spares and tools as you don’t want to travel to Bastia or Ajaccio
